I just read a really interesting blog post by a lady that is a library director at an academic library up North, and despite her great advice to people looking for library jobs, I was put off by her negativity. I understand that she is tired of reading resumes and cover letters, but there are better ways to deliver criticisms, IMHO. Her post was about cover letters and how not to write a bad one. A lot of her advice was good (such as to read and re-read the job description, and answer each required and preferred qualification), but she made several harsh blanket statements (such as 'if you do such and such, we will read it and hate you').
One thing I love about librarianship is how helpful librarians are. We love helping people, helping each other, supporting each other, etc. This lady was not giving off a very helpful vibe. So I just want to throw this out there: if you need help, please ask me. I don't claim to be an expert, but I would be happy to be another set of eyes on your resume or cover letter. I would be happy to give my 2 cents, and I'll do my best to keep it positive. The job market is depressing enough without having some bitter librarian snarl at you from her soapbox.
